Legal Name and Predecessor Organizations

Our corporate title for all gifts is The National Mental Health Association, Inc. Bequests should be designated to “The National Mental Health Association, Inc. dba Mental Health America, a non-profit corporation located in Alexandria, Virginia.”

  • NMHA was founded in 1909, and your client may know us by a previous name:
  • We were originally named the National Committee for Mental Hygiene.
  • In 1950 that organization merged with the National Mental Health Foundation, with the successor corporation called the National Association for Mental Health.
  • In 1960 we set up the Research Foundation of the National Association for Mental Health as a subsidiary.
  • In 1984 we changed our name to the National Mental Health Association.
  • In 1992 the American Mental Health Fund merged into NMHA.
